In 2025 SolarAid saw how collective action can bring about real change. A key example of this was our breakthrough moment in one of the remotest villages in Malawi, Kasakula. By coming together, teams in the UK, Zambia and Malawi worked with governments and local people to make history happen. 8,813 people- every single household – in Kasakula gained access to electricity for the first time.

Now that the new year has begun, many of us have taken time to reflect on what matters most. Often we’re looking for ways to feel healthier and more connected, or to give back. Taking on an active challenge for SolarAid is one way to do all three.
We’re always blown away by the commitment shown by our amazing supporters. Last year alone, our brilliant fundraisers ran, swam, walked and cycled 14,367.31 miles. That’s an incredible collective effort to transform lives in sub-Saharan Africa through access to clean, green solar energy.
SolarAid’s very own, Emily Bellis, shares her experiences of taking on the London Marathon to help provide energy access to more communities in even the remotest parts of sub- Saharan Africa:
“Running and fundraising for SolarAid was an incredible experience and I would truly recommend anybody thinking about taking on a challenge in the new year.”
Read Emily’s story here, and find out why she feels like she has unfinished business with the London Marathon.

Emily off to a roaring start on race day
Many of you will be inspired by Emily’s story, and some may even wish to try a marathon yourself, but we don’t all have to run a 26.2 mile race to make a difference.
There are plenty of ways you can fundraise for SolarAid. Check out our events page to find the active challenge that best suits you.
If you’re looking for regal, try the Hampton Court Half Marathon, which is the only half marathon to start and finish at this historic royal palace! Or if you’d like a livelier route then Bristol Great Run could be the one for you – soak up the city’s street art and stunning views in this popular spring event. SolarAid offers places for both these unforgettable races, and many more, through our RunforCharity membership.
This year, you could be part of the movement too. Help yourself, help others, and help the planet. Take on an active challenge and give families in rural communities access to clean, safe, energy.
