Racing to Make a Difference: A 43-kilometre challenge through the desert

Alice Perry

At SolarAid, we are often impressed by the challenges people take on in support of our mission to bring clean, safe energy to the most remote communities in sub-Saharan Africa. From sponsored tattoos to writing solar-themed books, our supporters never fail to surprise us. One such Solar Champion, Arno Macken, took his fundraising to new heights:

A scientist by trade, Arno knew he wanted to contribute to a cause that tackled the intersection of social and environmental issues as he believes they are “two of the most important issues of our time”. He came across SolarAid online and thought running this epic African race seemed like a great fundraising fit.

Although he had always been sporty, Arno had never completed a marathon before. He ran the Amsterdam half as part of his training, but his first 43-kilometre race spanned the island of Boa Vista.

Usually working as a doctor in The Netherlands, Arno took a short break from his medical profession to explore the beautiful island of Cape Verde and undertake a huge fundraising challenge in aid of SolarAid- Boa Vista Eco Marathon.

Drawn to the diverse landscape as well as its rich and complex culture, Arno spent 5 weeks travelling around the archipelagic state off the coast of West Africa. He immersed himself in the local music scene and was charmed by the hospitality of Cape Verdean people.

43 kilometres across the desert in the blazing heat are testing conditions for anyone, especially a first-time marathon runner, but the scale of the challenge did not intimidate Arno Macken.

Arno certainly rose to the challenge! He came third, finishing in 4 hours and 31 minutes and says he feels proud of his achievement and grateful for the support he received throughout.
