SolarAid is extremely proud that our social enterprise, SunnyMoney, has won the Unilever Global Development Award at the 2017 Responsible Business Awards.
Below you will find the video which accompanied our application, which explains what SunnyMoney does out in Africa. This award is a huge accolade for all the staff of SunnyMoney in Uganda, Zambia and Malawi who spend every day working on our mission of eradicating the kerosene lamp and providing access to clean, renewable energy.
SunnyMoney won the Global Development Award for its catalytic business-based model and pioneering work with the SM100 and Pay-As-You-Go solar lights, which make such a unique contribution to global development.
The award’s main criteria was to demonstrate an impact to one or more of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the fact that our work in Africa contributes to 10 of the 17 goals definitely helped secure the award.
Whilst we are very grateful for this recognition, celebrating our achievements does not actually help us achieve our mission, and we will now be working harder than ever to make the most of this award by reaching out to those who share our concerns to encourage them to join us.
In this day-and-age, we believe, it is entirely unacceptable that 1.2 billion lack access to clean electricity whilst such a clear, and well-proven, solution to the problem exists. We call on anyone who shares this sentiment, particularly companies looking to offset their own carbon emissions and those with access to distribution networks in the developing world, to step forward and work with us to solve this problem once and for all.
