Breathing toxic fumes

The expensive and toxic alternatives families use to escape the darkness can have devastating effects on their health. Using a kerosene lamp or a crude oil candle releases thick, toxic smoke into a family’s home each year causing eye strains, chest infections, and leading to more serious illness.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 4 million people per year die prematurely from illnesses attributable to household air pollution. This is more deaths per year than HIV, malaria and tuberculosis combined.

Toxic lighting sources cause a preventable strain on already fragile healthcare systems, which themselves are often reliant on kerosene, candles or diesel in order to operate.

With a solar light, communities are healthier. Every solar light improves the health of 3 people.

A solar light improves health.

"[The kerosene lantern] was polluting the air, my kids were having eye infections and they were coughing a lot. It was costing me a lot for their treatment."
