We're lighting up lives

Nearly 600 million people across sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity and ignite polluting and toxic lighting sources such as paraffin candles and kerosene lamps. SolarAid is creating a world where everyone has access to safe clean solar lights.

You care about renewable energy

If you are visiting this page, you may have attended an event in your local community run by Statkraft to learn about renewable energy projects such as wind or solar power.

Nearly 600 million people across sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity and ignite polluting and toxic lighting sources, such as paraffin candles and kerosene lamps. Solar-powered lights can change that in an instant.

In 2021, SolarAid and Statkraft announced a strategic partnership to tackle poverty and climate change, bringing clean energy to rural communities across Africa that have historically relied on unsafe lighting sources. Statkraft is supporting SolarAid with donations totalling £2m to be paid over three years. This has provided a significant boost to our work, enabling us to deliver new innovative projects, such as light libraries, and reach even more communities.

In addition to safety and environmental benefits, there are also significant economic benefits for families, many living below the poverty line of less than two dollars a day. Solar light reduces energy costs, eliminating the need to buy kerosene, paraffin candles or poor quality torch batteries which frequently run out and are bad for the environment.

If you choose to support SolarAid you can give these families the opportunity to use solar power in their homes for the first time. You’ll be joining other individuals like you, and organisations such as Statkraft, who share our belief that everyone should have access to renewable energy.
