SolarAid first began working in Zambia in 2008 through our social enterprise SunnyMoney. SunnyMoney since then has been building a sustainable solar market in Zambia through the sale and distribution of pico-solar lights.

The electrification rate of the country is currently 31% nationwide – only 4% of rural households have access to electricity. Through SunnyMoney and innovative programmes like Light Library, first launched in January 2019, we will work to combat energy poverty and climate change, providing rural communities with economic opportunity and clean energy solutions that work until no one is left in the dark.

Over 2.4 million CO2 emissions could be averted if 10 million people used solar lights

10 million people do not have access to electricity.

More than 70% of people living in rural Zambia use expensive, unreliable torches.
