We are thrilled to announce that SolarAid has won the Energy Globe National Award for Malawi!
The Energy Globe Award was founded in 1999 by the Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Neumann and is one of today’s most prestigious environmental awards. All of the national winners were announced on World Environment Day (June 5th) and the presentation of the awards was recently held at the Austrian Embassy.
This marks the third consecutive year that SolarAid has won the award in recognition of our work to bring solar light to the poorest families in Malawi:
- 2017: SolarAid wins the award for developing the world’s most affordable solar light, the SM100, and for pioneering pay-as-you-go (PAYG) programmes for small solar lights.
- 2018: SolarAid wins a second time for innovations to increase the efficiency and impact of its market-based model, The SunnyMoney Way.
- 2019: SolarAid is awarded the Energy Globe Award for Malawi for launching new innovations to reach the poorest families with solar light.
Over the last 11 years, SolarAid has provided access to solar lights for 1.5 million people across rural Malawi by selling the most affordable solar lights through a market-based model, working with schools and local entrepreneurs. But this is not enough.
United under our mission – ‘No one left in the dark’, we know that we need to go beyond ‘business as usual’. In 2019, we have been developing and launching new models, designed specifically to reach the poorest families – so that they too, can join the solar revolution.
We will continue to develop and scale bold innovations, like Light Libraries and Project Switch, to reach the 600 million people that currently do not have access to electricity. As always, we would not be able to continue reaching families with solar light if it wasn’t for you – our fantastic supporters.
