SunnyMoney is a pioneering ‘last mile’ distributor of pico-solar lights and products in Zambia, working to increase access to clean, renewable energy across the country. Our award winning work has kick-started solar markets and is providing economic opportunity for businesses and local entrepreneurs whilst making clean, safe light accessible in remote rural areas.

The Job

We are looking for a dynamic, bottom line driven sales and general management executive to lead our operations in Zambia. You will be responsible for overall management of our country operations, overseeing our programme of work, our team and our overall sales strategy. You will also be expected to work with our London based team as we develop new innovations and models, designed to increase access to energy for all. Ultimately you will contribute to the ongoing creation of a viable and vibrant solar market in off-grid communities in Zambia, that will result in the elimination of the use of candles, kerosene lamps and substandard lights and torches used in off grid communities.

Reporting to our CEO, the successful candidate will be responsible for development and delivery of the SunnyMoney business plan in Zambia with a key emphasis on ensuring cost effective route to market strategies, robust operational and sales management systems and effective cost control guided by principles of prudence and personal integrity. The candidate will be the most senior in-country member of staff and must thus have the ability and interpersonal skills to engage, collaborate and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders including staff, suppliers, government agencies, customers, funders and collaborators and especially in relation to variables that impact on business performance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Lead the SunnyMoney operation in Zambia, maximising sales and profitability through effective route to market strategies and prudent cost management;
  2. Lead the implementation and scale up of our ambitious SunnyMoney Agent programme in accordance with our current business plan
  3. Take the lead on all routes to market including working with partners, corporates and other NGOs in country to generate sales.
  4. Work to increase the profile of SunnyMoney Zambia through creating and implementing a successful plan to engage with key stakeholders, partners and government ministries.
  5. Develop our customer service and marketing capacity within Zambia, in order to build SunnyMoney as a trusted solar brand.
  6. Oversee product purchases to ensure strong sales and good margins, which includes deciding on what solar lights to sell in the Zambia market.
  7. As necessary, recruit and lead a team of A-player staff who will successfully implement the programme, including a sales team that will hit and exceed targets.
  8. Support our research work which both aims to help us understand and better serve our customers and demonstrate the positive impact solar products have on education, health and quality of life
  9. Ensure that all financial and narrative reports are submitted internally and externally on time, in the correct format and to a high standard.
  10. Implement strong Human Resources management system as set out in our staff handbook, dealing quickly, firmly and fairly with all HR issues in accordance with Zambia law.
  11. With the support the head of accounts in London oversee the accounting in country, keeping in line with budgets and making sure that the office is compliant with all statutory issues.
  12. Work with SolarAid staff and other funders to secure potential funding opportunities;

Person Specification Skills/ knowledge

  1. Strong business planning, sales and operations management skills; Proven ability to creatively drive sales in rural settings through innovative route to market strategies;
  2. Substantial staff management skills (recruiting, developing, motivating and rewarding for productivity)
  3. Strong financial literacy skills (prepare budgets and financial reports to monitor expenditure against budgets for management control)
  4. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively represent the Organisation in meetings and conferences and write clear and concise management and other reports;
  5. Able to make optimal decisions from a range of options, initiate actions proactively and take full responsible for the decisions made;
  6. Excellent oral and written English. Knowledge of local languages, an advantage.
  7. Computer literacy (project planning, spreadsheets, word processing, email/internet)
  8. Educated to degree level (or considerable professional management and operational experience)
  9. Five years experience of leading successful commercial or social enterprises, preferably in rural Africa bottom of the pyramid;
  10. Experience of managing human and financial resources that demonstrates ability to set objectives, monitor and evaluate progress and outcomes.

Terms and conditions

  • Full-time, permanent
  • Notice period: one week within probationary period, three months thereafter
  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Location: Lusaka with frequent travel across the country
