Anna: November 2008 Archives
Kadzuwa and Muuni means 'sun and light' in Chichewa...or more specifically 'little sun' and 'light giver'. To put in context, in Chichewa when you talk about 'muuni' you might be referring to a piece of wood that is still hot from the fire, still glowing with embers, that you could use to start another fire or to provide a small amount of light in the darkness.
I met two women called Annie and Temwa on my recent trip to Mzuzu in Malawi. They were so inspired by the lantern and the use of small solar panels that they wrote a song titled 'Kadzuwa and Muuni' that they kindly performed to me!

Annie Jere and Temwa Mkandawire singing Kadzuwa and Muuni.
Here are the lyrics to their beautiful song with the English translation below...
(In Chichewa)
Kadzuwa ndi Muuni
Kadzuwa m'bale wanga kadzuwa
Kadzuwa tikambe za kadzuwa
Kadzuwa abale wokondeka
Kandikometsera ine
(Chorus)
Palibe chingandilekanitse
Kadzuwa ndi m'bale wake muuni
Kadzuwa abale wokondeka
Kandikometsera ine
Muuni achemwali muuni
Muuni tikambe za muuni
Muuni abale wokondeka
Undiunikira chikondi
(Chorus)
Palibe chingandilekanitse
Ku muuni ndi bale wake dzuwa
Muuni achemwali muuni
Undiunikira chikondi
(In English)
Sun and Light
Sun, my friend Sun
Let's talk about the sun
Sun, my loving sun
You make me feel the warmth
(Chorus)
Nothing can separate me from these two
Sun, my dear sun
You make me feel the warmth
Light, my dear sister light
Let's talk about the light
Light, my dear light
You are lightening love
(Chorus)
Nothing can separate me from these two
Light, my dear sister
Light, my dear light
You are lightening love
It's humbling to see such a wonderful reaction to the use of solar energy in producing light- something that we take so much for granted in the west.
Please help us to reach more people like Annie and Temwa, touching more lives and lighting more Malawian homes.
Please donate to this project.
Thank you!
Katie
