Romonah Omukhobero, solar entrepreneur

Name: Judith Andrew

Region: Muhuru Bay, Kenya

My name is Judith Atieno Andrew. I'm 21 and married with two children, aged five and two. I was born, married and live in Muhuru Bay. My husband is a taxi driver and I manage a pool table -- people pay me to play. I spend 12,000 Shillings a month on food, clothing, repairs, school fees and travel.

When I first heard about SolarAid I was interested because I saw people suffering financially when buying kerosene, charging phones over and over and buying batteries that don't last. Solar products will help local people save money. I passed the interview and was elected to be a franchisee with SolarAid. It was very exciting because there were many competing for the chance. During the training course I learned so much.

My life will change. Now I can take my children to the school in town so they will learn more. I will be financially stable and improve the living standard of my family. The first thing I will do is buy materials to build a bigger house. My customers' lives will change -- they will have light now in their homes and the money they were spending on kerosene and batteries can be spent on other things.

sunnymoney is the name of SolarAid's micro-enterprise scheme that trains entrepreners to sell innovative solar products to lift themselves out of poverty. Find out more
